24th March: Councillor Calls for 'forced sterilisation'
councilwatch

In a bizarre move, a councillor on Medway Council has called for 'forced sterilisation' for any individual who has a second or third child whilst living on state benefit.

Conservative Councillor John Ward wrote the following on his website in reference to the mother of missing Yorkshire girl Shannon Matthews:

"I think there is an increasingly strong case for compulsory sterilisation of all those who have had a second (or third, or whatever) child while living off State hand-outs. It would (if one thinks about it) clearly take a lot of social pressures off all concerned, thus protecting the youngsters themselves to some degree, and remove the incentive to "breed for greed" -- i.e. for more public subsidy of their lifestyle (a now well-known dodge, worth ever greater amounts to countless thousands of professional spongers)." - Cllr John Ward, 15th March 2008

Paul Clark MP has written to Cllr Ward to ask for an explanation of his remarks and we will be posting his reply on this website.
