   Facts and Figures
  Employment
  • The Jobseekers Allowance claimant count in Gillingham and Rainham has fallen from 2,239 people in May 1997 to 1,482 people in October 2006 – from 3.6% of constituents to 2.4% of constituents.
  • Over 700 people took up apprenticeships in Medway in 2006/7 and the Apprenticeship Task Force aims to increase this to over 1000 as one of their primary goals
  • The number of people who have been helped into work in Gillingham and Rainham by:
  1. The New Deal for Young People since 1998: 860 as at May 06
  2. The New Deal for Lone Parents since 1998:  790 as at May 06
  3. The New Deal 50+ since 2003: 50 as at May 06 
 Incapacity Benefit
  • The number of people receiving incapacity benefit in Gillingham and Rainham stood at 1610 in May 2006 compared to 1650 in May 2005
  • In the South East of England, the number of incapacity benefit recipients has fallen by 1270 in the twelve months to Feb 06
 Helping older people
  • The number of people who received the Winter Fuel Payment in Gillingham and Rainham last year:  17,050
  • The number of people helped by Pension Credit in Gillingham and Rainham as at May 06: 4,000
  • The average price of a pension credit in Gillingham: £44.00
 Tackling poverty
  • The number of children in relative poverty in the South East of England, after housing costs, has fallen since 1997 by 80,000 children
  • The number of pensioners helped out of relative poverty in your region since 1997, after housing costs: 70,000
 Health and Safety at Work
  • The number of injuries at work in the South East of England since 2001 has fallen from 1320 to 990 injuries per 100,000 workers (latest data, 2004-5) 
 Education
  • Over 50% of pupils achieve at least 5 A*-C grades at GCSE
  • The teaching workforce has improved considerably since 1997 in Gillingham -
  1. An average pupil-teacher ratio of under 22:1
  2. 310 teaching assistants, increased from 170 in 1997.  Nationally the amount of teaching assistants has more than doubled from 61,262 to 130,430
  • There are 1500 more primary school teachers in the South East region and 4800 more secondary school teachers
 Health

  • 97.7% of patients in Medway spend less than 4 hours waiting for A&E treatment, increased from 81% in 2003
  • 99.4% of Medway cancer patients are now treated within two months of referral
  • The amount of Medway nurses increased by 382; from 812 to 1194
