On Thursday 29 November, the Prime Minister launched the Thames Gateway Delivery Plan which detailed investment on jobs, skills training, health and transport within the Gateway. Thanks to the
Government led Thames Gateway initiative, Medway will receive an extra £23.5m for transport projects.
Of this additional money, £1.5m will go into Gillingham Railway Station to undertake "improvements to the existing ticket hall, forecourt and access arrangements to the station"
Paul Clark MP said, "I am absolutely delighted that a significant tranche of money has been awarded by the Government to help fund some improvements to this busy station.
"Anyone who follows these things will know that I have argued constantly for investment in the station – taking up the matter with "old" Railtrack, Connex, Network Rail, Southeastern and even
Medway Council.
"A station of this importance should be an integral part of the community.
"But I know this money is only a start. I call upon Network Rail and Southeastern to add their money to this Government funding and to seek possible private partnership development as has happened
at other stations.
"Equally, I hope that those that constantly bleat about the Government not providing money for infrastructure in the Thames Gateway – such as roads, rail, cycleways, health and education facilities
– will issue clear statements refuting such nonsense.
